Picking the right music can make or break your season. The best marching band shows don’t just sound good—they tell a story, pace your visual design, grow your students’ skills, and keep everyone fired up from band camp to finals. Below are the five questions I ask (and use when I write/arrange) to choose music that performs on the field and in the box.

1) Does the music clearly tell your show’s story?

Your concept drives everything. If your theme is exploration, the score should feel expansive and curious; if it’s reflective, you’ll want intimate colors and space for nuance. Look for:

Narrative shape: tension/release, contrasts (fast/slow, light/dark), clear arrival points

Motivic clarity: memorable ideas that can return and evolve across movements

Emotional cues: orchestration and harmony that match the visual narrative

If the music doesn’t communicate your concept, even great drill won’t save it. Build your story first, then let the score amplify it. For inspiration, browse Marching Band Shows and New Marching Band Shows for 2026.

2) Will it fit your circuit’s total time—without butchering the music?

UIL, BOA, and local circuits all have length requirements. Choose material that can adapt cleanly to those bounds:

Map ideal durations per movement (opener, ballad, closer, percussion feature)

Identify cut-points that preserve musical grammar (cadences, transitions)

Coordinate early with your arranger so musical edits support pacing and effect

Time that fits from day one means more reps on performance quality and fewer emergency rewrites in October. If you’re building from scratch, my Build Your Show framework keeps music, drill, and timing aligned.

3) Does the pacing support effective visual design?

Great field design needs musical landmarks: releases for impacts, transitions for staging, and phrase lengths that fit set-construction. As you evaluate music, ask:

Where are the arrival chords for flags, rifles, or battery punches?

Do you have texture thins for staging moves and texture builds for effect?

Are phrase lengths consistent enough to support readable forms?

Well-paced scores make drill writing faster, staging cleaner, and effect writing easier—your GE judge will notice. For day-one clarity, see Fundamentals Packages to lock in ensemble timing, feet-in-time, and releases.

4) Will it grow your students—without breaking them?

Your show is a classroom. Pick music that targets specific skills by section:

Winds: range limits, articulation variety, sustained tone, intonation anchors

Percussion: battery vocabulary, front-ensemble voicing, coordinated impacts

Guard: phrase lengths that align with toss vocab and body phrasing

Right-sized challenge builds confidence, retention, and late-season ceiling. Too easy = flat growth; too hard = morale dip. Set key centers that support your winds’ best sound and ensure exposed moments sit where you can actually tune them.

5) Do you—and your students—actually love it?

You’ll live with this soundtrack for months. If the staff isn’t sold, students will feel it. Choose music that you believe in:

Can you imagine the closer bringing the stadium to its feet?

Do you hear two or three “wow” moments you can stage tomorrow?

Does it fit your community while still pushing artistry?

Enthusiasm is a competitive advantage. When you love it, you rehearse it better—and it shows up on Saturday.

Conclusion

Choosing music for marching band shows is equal parts art and strategy. Align story, timing, pacing, educational growth, and buy-in, and you’ll set up a season that’s memorable for your audience and meaningful for your students.

FAQ: Choosing Music for Marching Band Shows

How long should my show music be for most circuits?
Most circuits fall between ~6–8 minutes, but rules vary. Outline movement lengths early and pick music that edits cleanly to avoid awkward cuts.

Is it better to use one composer/theme or mix sources?
Either works—consistency is what matters. If you mix sources, unify them with recurring motives, tonal centers, and consistent orchestration.

How do I know if the keys are realistic for my winds?
Check exposed moments first (ballad melodies, soft entrances). Favor keys that sit in comfortable ranges for trumpet/clarinet/alto sax and support low-brass resonance.

What if my band grows (or shrinks) over the summer?
Select music with scalable textures—solos that can become section features, optional counterlines, and percussion voicings that expand/contract without rewriting the show.

How early should I loop in my arranger and drill writer?
Immediately. Share your concept, time map, skill goals, and staging ideas before finalizing repertoire so the music and visual plan evolve together.

Horizons Untold perfectly captures the excitement of possibilities unknown! In crafting this brief concert opener, the goal was to create an inspirational piece that resonates with performers and listeners in various ways. Some may envision a journey, gazing optimistically toward the horizon, while others may feel a sense of celebration. Additionally, the composition may evoke a patriotic sentiment in some. Regardless of personal interpretation, the soaring melodies, bold fanfares, and shimmering flourishes of the piece will captivate and energize the audience, setting the stage for an unforgettable concert experience!

Inspirare (Latin for inspire) was commissioned by Robert Herrings and the Vista Ridge High School Band to celebrate the fine arts programs of Leander Independent School District, located just north of Austin, Texas—a community long recognized for its excellence in music, theatre, and visual arts. The title evokes both the academic spirit and creative energy that define the district’s artistic legacy. The Leander ISD Fine Arts motto—Innovate, Ignite, Inspire—serves as the guiding framework for the composition, with the form of the piece unfolding around those three ideals. The final word, Inspire, becomes the emotional centerpiece and the source of the work’s title.

“March to the Scaffold” from Hector Berlioz’s Symphony Fantastique is a vivid and dramatic musical piece, masterfully transcribed by Evan VanDoren for the modern wind ensemble. Infused with the tones of unrequited love and despair, the symphony tells the story of a lovelorn musician’s opium-induced visions, culminating in the fourth movement where he dreams of his own execution after murdering his beloved. This movement, emanating both somber and brilliant tones, is a testament to Berlioz’s ability to weave narrative into music, offering a thrilling auditory experience that echoes the tumultuous emotions of a tragic love story.

This work was originally commissioned by Vandegrift HS, from Austin, Texas, and premiered at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago.

With Gratitude is a heartfelt musical letter to those in our lives to whom we want to give thanks.

Before crafting this work, the commissioning director and I wrote letters to our mentors detailing how these key individuals had impacted us in unique and lasting ways. These letters became the musical framework for this piece, aiming to communicate through music what we first aimed to express in words. The title of this work comes from the “signoff” of my letter, a final statement of thanks to the recipient.

As the composer of this work, I dedicate this musical letter of thanks to Robert W. Smith, my composing mentor. I count myself among the many lucky thousands to have been touched by his mentorship, music, and genuine personal kindness.

It is my sincere hope that this work provides all who perform, conduct, and listen to it the opportunity to pause and reflect on those who have positively impacted their lives.

She Loves the Light

Feature the sound and sonority of your young band with this emotional, lyrical work. Colorful harmonies, flowing lines, unique percussive textures, and clever scoring make She Loves the Light an ideal musical tribute for someone special to your program or community.

The composer writes: “She Loves the Light is conceived for and dedicated to my daughter Anna. As many new parents come to understand, the love felt for your first child at birth is altogether overwhelming, awe-inspiring, terrifying, and more… and something I didn’t even begin to understand until I experienced it for myself. In the many hours spent holding her in the first weeks of her life, Anna was drawn consistently to light. It’s true; many infants are attracted to shiny, bright things as they adjust to the new world around them. But for me, there was something magical about seeing Anna light up when she experienced light catching her eye. This lullaby seeks to capture the wonderment of that moment of light, both what Anna must have felt when experiencing the light, but perhaps more vividly, my sense of awe, love, and hope for the future I continue to feel when I see her light up.”

Introduction

I understand how crucial the marching band season is to your overall band program. For many students, it’s the highlight of their year. Their success, or lack thereof, shapes their perception of their band experience and sets the tone for your program’s culture and its future trajectory.

It can be incredibly disheartening when a show doesn’t live up to expectations. I’ve experienced this firsthand during my nine-year tenure as a director at Cedar Park High School in Austin, Texas. Seeing fellow directors grapple with disappointment when their show doesn’t hit the mark due to factors beyond their control is genuinely distressing. The sting is particularly sharp when designers fail to deliver top-notch work, communicate ineffectively, or miss deadlines.

The situation becomes even more complex when funding comes into play. With limited resources, creating a spectacular marching band show can be a daunting task. Relying on pre-made music doesn’t always cater to your band’s unique needs!

This situation is unjust to you, your community, and most importantly, your students. As someone who has walked in your shoes, I am committed to delivering my best work for every band because you truly deserve it.

Picking Previously Commissioned Music

A great solution, outside of commissioning a brand new arrangement for your band (which often can be time and money intensive), is to pick music from a catalog that’s already written! By doing so, you save valuable time and money, and can often get an even better result.

Peruse my marching band shows to find a show you like! Or, select individual arrangements from different shows with which you’d like to create your own unique show. Then, I’ll custom-tailor each piece to perfectly fit your band, making adjustments so, in the end, you’ll have your own new, custom arrangement.

By selecting from my previously commissioned marching band shows, you’ll save money, time, and the headaches associated from starting from scratch!

What makes my marching band shows different?

Drawing from my experience as a band director, my educational background, and active involvement in the marching arts…

Music is composed to align seamlessly with the band’s skill level. To put it simply, if I wouldn’t want to teach it, I won’t write it! The scores and parts come to you already “pre-cleaned”, so your students can sound great from the very first read!

Music is written with fundamental concepts in mind and instrument-specific challenges considered. The “little” details make the “big difference”. Things like choosing keys that put students in good ranges, and on more “in-tune” notes. Things like avoiding the throat tones on clarinets. Things like writing woodwind (and brass) technique that, while might sound challenging, are written to use very playable fingerings. Things like considering the lengths of phrases played, and how often students need to breathe!

Music is always delivered on time. No exceptions. The last thing you need is the stress of waiting on your show. You’re already spinning enough plates as it is!

Music will be in your hands with plenty of time for the rest of your design team to do their thing. Once you have the core of your musical product, you can share it with the rest of your design team at an early stage. As the marching arts increasingly prioritize the visual coordination of your show, it is now more important than ever to ensure your visual designers are set up for success!

When you choose to commission an arrangement from me, I’ll be here to make it right for you – no matter what. From the moment your idea is born until the final performance, I’ll be by your side to adjust, tweak, help, suggest, and edit your musical program. Together, we’ll strive for maximum achievement and effectiveness.

How It Works

Pick your music! Choose a complete show or mix-and-match movements from different shows to create the marching band show that best suits your vision! Let me know what you’re interested in, and I’d be delighted to provide you with perusal scores so you can have a closer look!

Reserve your music! Reach out to me to let me know what you’re looking for! I’ll make sure your marching band show is available in your region. Then, we’ll work together to get the ball rolling on payments, copyright, and more.

Tell me about your band! I will ask you a variety of questions about your band to better understand how I can modify and adapt your music to suit your ensemble. I will specifically inquire about changing soloists, instrumentation, and difficulty during key moments.

Relax! Once licenses are obtained and payments are handled, I’ll dive in and fine-tune your arrangements to ensure they’re a perfect fit for your marching band!

Conclusion

In conclusion, crafting shows using previously commissioned music arrangements can save you time and money, and lead to even greater success! By discussing potential changes in soloists, instrumentation, and difficulty levels at crucial junctures, you’re poised to elevate your ensemble’s performance to new heights.

FAQ

What’s the main advantage of using pre-written music for my marching band show?
Using previously commissioned music saves time, money, and stress. You start with proven material that’s already worked for other ensembles and can be easily customized to fit your band’s strengths, instrumentation, and goals.

Will my show still feel unique if I use pre-written music?
Absolutely. Every arrangement is personalized for your group — including changes to solos, voicing, and difficulty — so your students sound their best and your show feels like yours.

How is your music different from other pre-written marching band shows?
Each piece is written with band directors in mind. Scores are “pre-cleaned” for easy readability, written in smart keys for student comfort, and built around solid fundamentals. Everything arrives on time, so your design team can coordinate early.

What’s the process for getting started?

Pick your music – Choose a full show or mix movements from several.

Reserve your show – I’ll confirm regional availability and handle licensing details.

Share details about your band – We’ll discuss instrumentation, soloists, and skill level.

Relax – I’ll customize and deliver your finished music, ready for rehearsal.

How do I know the music will fit my ensemble’s ability level?
Every show is written to align with your specific instrumentation and skill level. I won’t write anything I wouldn’t want to teach myself — your students will sound great from day one.

What if I need edits or changes later in the season?
I offer unlimited in-season editorial support. I’ll stay with you from concept to final performance, helping tweak and refine your show for maximum impact.

How early should I contact you to reserve a show?
As soon as possible! Many regions have exclusivity rules to prevent overlap. Early booking ensures your preferred show remains available and gives your design team a head start.

Do you handle copyright and licensing?
Yes — I’ll walk you through the licensing process and handle permissions for any copyrighted material so everything’s fully legal and stress-free.

I know every high school band looks different: some have powerhouse brass sections, while others shine in woodwinds or percussion. If your ensemble is missing certain instruments or has an unusual balance, I’ll re-score parts so your students sound confident and full. I can adjust difficulty levels, redistribute voices, and ensure that no section feels left out.
That includes all woodwind and brass music, fully adapted to your ensemble, as well as the entire collaborative process described above.

To put that number in context: some programs spend a few hundred dollars on music each year. Others spend tens — or even hundreds — of thousands on a single production. There’s no single “right” choice.

Writing and arranging music is one of the most rewarding parts of being a composer, band director, or arranger. But when you’re working with existing songs — especially for marching band shows — understanding copyright law is essential.

In my years writing and arranging for ensembles, I’ve seen many directors navigate copyright the hard way. The good news? You can protect yourself, respect original creators, and still create incredible music — confidently and legally.

Why Copyright Matters in Music Creation

Copyright exists to protect the creativity and livelihood of composers and songwriters. When you follow copyright laws, you’re not just avoiding fines — you’re honoring the artists who made your work possible.

Organizations like the Music Publishers Association of the United States (MPA) advocate for ethical music use. They stress that arrangers must get permission from the copyright owner before:

Creating or performing an arrangement

Making or distributing copies

Recording or sharing the work publicly

These permissions ensure fairness — and protect your students, school, or organization from serious legal risk. Civil penalties can reach thousands of dollars, and in some cases, even criminal charges can apply for willful infringement.

In my own arranging work, I’ve found that seeking permission early not only builds trust but often leads to valuable relationships with publishers and composers.

How to Obtain Permission for Band Arrangements

Getting permission isn’t as complicated as it sounds — it just takes planning and communication.

Start by searching repertory databases from performing rights organizations (PROs) such as ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, or GMR. These databases help identify the copyright owner and the rights involved, including:

Right to arrange, transcribe, or adapt

Right to distribute, duplicate, or record

Right to publicly perform the arrangement

If the song you want isn’t managed by a PRO, contact the publisher or the composer’s representative directly. Some publishers handle requests in-house; others use third-party services like Tresona to manage licensing.

It’s important to remember that a performance license from a PRO does not grant you the right to create an arrangement — you need both.

If you’re designing your next marching band show, make sure your arrangements are authorized before they hit the field. It’s one of the simplest ways to protect your program and your students.

Public Domain vs. Copyrighted Music

Understanding which music is free to use — and which isn’t — can save you a lot of time and headaches.

Public Domain: Most music published before 1923 is considered public domain in the U.S., meaning you can arrange or perform it freely.

Copyrighted Music: Anything published after that likely still has active rights, especially popular music. Each song in a medley, for example, needs its own separate permission.

Be careful: even if a piece is in the public domain, new arrangements or recordings of it may still be copyrighted. That means you can use Beethoven’s melodies, but not necessarily another arranger’s adaptation.

When in doubt, check the laws of the country you’re performing in, or consult with a copyright specialist before creating your arrangement.

Performing Rights and Exemptions

Even after obtaining permission to arrange, you’ll likely need a performing rights license to legally perform the piece in public.

These licenses, issued by PROs like ASCAP or BMI, ensure composers are compensated when their work is performed. However, there are a few exemptions:

K–12 schools: Performances that are part of classroom instruction are usually exempt.

Religious services: Non-dramatic performances in worship settings are also exempt.

Still, school marching bands performing outside of class time — football games, contests, or festivals — typically do need performance licenses.

For more on this topic, check out MakeMusic’s guide to copyright and marching band, which breaks down when and how licensing applies.

Best Practices for Authorized Band Arrangements

If you’re arranging or programming copyrighted music, follow these best practices to stay compliant and ethical:

Research before you write. Confirm the song’s copyright status before arranging it.

Plan ahead. Licensing can take weeks, so start early.

Keep documentation. Save all email correspondence and license agreements.

Credit the original creator. Always list the composer and copyright holder on programs and scores.

Respect the source. Make creative contributions, but don’t change the essence of the work.

Use professional services when needed. Companies like Tresona can handle licensing for you (for a fee).

When I arrange shows for schools, I always include proper credits and keep a record of permissions. It’s professional, respectful, and the right thing to do.

Copyright and Creativity Can Coexist

Some directors fear that copyright rules limit their creativity — but it’s the opposite. Working within the law ensures that both arrangers and composers are recognized for their art. It encourages collaboration and keeps the creative ecosystem healthy.

By following best practices, you protect your program, elevate your professionalism, and model integrity for your students. After all, respect for artistry is what music education is all about.

Conclusion

Copyright might seem intimidating, but with a little understanding and preparation, it’s completely manageable. Respect the creators who came before you, document your permissions, and keep learning.

When you do, you’ll find more freedom, not less — the freedom to create and perform your music with total confidence.

FAQ: Copyright and Marching Band Arrangements

1. Do I need permission to arrange a copyrighted song for marching band?
Yes. You must obtain written permission from the copyright owner before creating, copying, or performing an arrangement.

2. Are public domain works free to use?
Generally yes, but confirm publication dates and copyright status in your country before using older works.

3. Does my ASCAP or BMI license cover arrangements?
No. Performance licenses do not authorize you to create or adapt copyrighted music — you still need explicit arrangement permission.

4. What if my band performs at school events?
Performances tied directly to instruction may be exempt, but most football games and competitions still require performance licensing.

5. How can I simplify the licensing process?
Services like Tresona or your music publisher can handle the request process for a small fee, saving you time and ensuring compliance.

When students join a marching band, they’re not just learning drill sets and music — they’re developing focus, discipline, and problem-solving skills that spill into every part of their lives. It’s one of the most powerful, research-backed examples of how the arts drive academic success.

As a composer and former band director, I’ve seen it firsthand: marching band shows do far more than entertain. They build thinkers, leaders, and achievers — the kind of students who thrive in every classroom.

The Academic Advantage of Marching Band

Students who participate in marching band consistently show stronger organization, improved time management, and sharper focus. Balancing rehearsals, performances, and academics forces them to plan ahead and make the most of every minute.

That structure becomes second nature. Students learn accountability — not just to their directors, but to their peers. That responsibility carries into their schoolwork, helping them meet deadlines, stay engaged, and push for excellence.

When I work with programs designing marching band shows, I often see the same thing: students who’ve learned how to focus and follow through outperform themselves in the classroom, too.

The Transferable Skills That Shape Success

1. Time Management and Organization

Between classes, rehearsals, and performances, students learn to plan, prioritize, and execute. Those same habits lead to better study skills and consistent academic progress.

2. Teamwork and Communication

Performing in sync with 100 other people takes awareness and communication. Band students master collaboration early — a skill that shines in group projects, leadership roles, and future careers.

3. Discipline and Focus

Learning complex drill and music requires discipline and sustained attention. The ability to focus deeply through long rehearsals translates to stronger concentration and persistence in academics.

4. Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking

Whether adjusting a set or fixing a musical phrase, students learn how to adapt and think strategically. These same critical-thinking skills strengthen performance in subjects like math and science.

5. Leadership and Confidence

Marching band gives students real leadership opportunities — from section leaders to drum majors. They learn how to motivate, guide, and communicate effectively, all while keeping the group moving forward.

Why Music Advocacy Matters for Academic Growth

Music education doesn’t just make students more creative — it literally strengthens the brain. Studies show that reading music, memorizing patterns, and performing complex rhythms enhance neural connections that support learning in math, reading, and problem-solving.

Music advocacy ensures that students have access to programs that nurture these skills. When schools support music education, they’re also investing in academic achievement, emotional well-being, and long-term student success.

In every thriving band program I’ve seen, academic success follows right behind musical success. The connection is real.

The Link Between Marching Band and Higher Grades

There’s a growing body of research showing a clear correlation between music participation and improved academic performance. Students in band often report:

Higher GPAs and standardized test scores

Improved attendance and engagement

Stronger resilience when facing academic challenges

The reason is simple: marching band develops both cognitive and emotional skills. The focus, discipline, and teamwork that drive performance on the field also drive performance in the classroom.

If you want to see this connection in action, take a look at Build Your Show — where directors design performances that push students to think, collaborate, and grow.

Creativity and Critical Thinking in Marching Band Shows

Designing and performing a show is a creative process that demands innovation and strategy. Students learn how to think outside the box, make artistic choices, and adapt in real time.

From interpreting music to shaping visual design, they develop creative and analytical thinking skills that directly support success in STEM and humanities alike.

If you’re planning your next season, browse New Marching Band Shows for 2026 — each concept is built to engage imagination, emotion, and intellect.

Teamwork, Discipline, and Personal Growth

No ensemble succeeds without both teamwork and discipline. Students learn that individual effort only matters when it supports the whole group. That mindset builds empathy, accountability, and leadership.

These qualities extend beyond rehearsal — into classrooms, jobs, and life. Marching band helps students become responsible, motivated contributors to every community they join.

The Bigger Picture: Why Extracurriculars Matter

Marching band isn’t just an extracurricular — it’s an education multiplier. Students who engage deeply in creative programs are more confident, curious, and self-driven.

They discover their strengths, build lifelong friendships, and experience success that’s earned through collaboration and consistency. That’s the kind of learning that can’t be replicated by tests or textbooks.

Conclusion

Marching band shows are where art meets discipline — and the results show up everywhere. Students become more organized, more confident, and more capable of learning, leading, and succeeding.

If you want proof that the arts strengthen academics, look no further than your local band program. It’s not just music; it’s preparation for life.

FAQ: Marching Band Shows and Academic Success

1. Does participating in marching band really improve grades?
Yes. The time management, focus, and discipline students build in band often translate to stronger academic performance.

2. What academic skills do students learn from marching band?
Organization, problem-solving, communication, and leadership — all directly connected to classroom success.

3. How does music education support cognitive development?
Reading and performing music strengthens memory, spatial reasoning, and pattern recognition — all essential for math and science learning.

4. Why is music advocacy important in schools?
Advocacy ensures funding, qualified teachers, and access to programs that support both creativity and academic excellence.

5. How do marching band shows develop critical thinking?
Students must analyze, adapt, and solve creative challenges in real time — key skills that apply to every subject.

I know every high school band looks different: some have powerhouse brass sections, while others shine in woodwinds or percussion.
To put that number in context: some programs spend a few hundred dollars on music each year. Others spend tens — or even hundreds — of thousands on a single production. There’s no single “right” choice.

When people think of marching band shows, they picture the lights, the uniforms, and the roar of the crowd. But the real story happens behind the scenes — in the long rehearsals, shared laughs, and quiet moments when students learn what they’re capable of.

As a composer and former band director, I’ve seen it again and again: marching band builds people. The lessons learned on the field shape how students think, lead, and work with others long after the final show.

Discipline and Time Management

Every successful season starts with consistency. Hours of repetition and refinement teach students discipline — not because anyone forces it, but because excellence demands it.

Balancing school, family, and rehearsal schedules pushes them to plan ahead and manage time wisely. Those habits transfer far beyond music. They build the kind of focus that fuels success in college and careers.

When I design marching band shows, I’m always inspired by the dedication students show every single day. That persistence becomes part of who they are.

Teamwork and Collaboration

Marching band is one of the purest examples of teamwork you’ll find in education. Every performer depends on everyone else — whether it’s aligning visuals or blending musical phrases.

Students learn communication, compromise, and shared accountability. When something doesn’t go as planned, they problem-solve together, not alone. That kind of collaboration is priceless, both on the field and in life.

If you’re helping your students strengthen these foundations, check out the Fundamentals Packages for structured exercises that build ensemble unity and confidence.

Leadership and Responsibility

Every program needs leaders — section leaders, drum majors, student coordinators. These roles teach students to inspire rather than command, to model professionalism, and to lead by example.

They learn that leadership isn’t about power; it’s about service. The experience builds confidence, empathy, and decision-making skills that translate directly into the real world.

Adaptability and Resilience

No season goes perfectly. Weather changes, drill sets get rewritten, and equipment fails at the worst possible time.

Through it all, students learn how to remain calm, think critically, and adapt with purpose. Marching band teaches them that success isn’t avoiding challenges — it’s responding with flexibility and composure.

I’ve watched students overcome setbacks that would rattle most adults. Marching band teaches resilience you can’t fake.

Musical Growth and Expression

Marching band is one of the most demanding musical experiences a student can have. Performing complex music while executing precision drill requires focus, endurance, and artistry.

It deepens understanding of tone, rhythm, phrasing, and ensemble awareness. Students develop stronger ears and faster instincts — the kind of musicianship that strengthens every other ensemble, from concert to jazz.

If you’re selecting repertoire for your next season, explore New Marching Band Shows for 2026 to find inspiring, field-ready concepts for your group.

Diversity, Inclusivity, and Confidence

Marching bands bring together students from all walks of life. Differences in background, experience, and perspective become strengths. Within this shared purpose, students learn respect, empathy, and inclusivity.

Performing for large audiences builds confidence in a way few classrooms can. That sense of belonging — the feeling of being part of something bigger — stays with them forever.

Cognitive and Academic Benefits

Marching band challenges both the body and mind. Students memorize music, drill, and visual cues while reacting to real-time changes — sharpening memory, attention, and problem-solving skills.

That mental stamina often shows up in the classroom. Many band students report improved academic focus and study habits, especially during the busiest parts of the season.

A Lifelong Connection to Music

Ask any adult musician where it started, and many will point back to marching band. The friendships, the rush of performance, and the joy of creating something meaningful together — those experiences last.

Marching band doesn’t just build performers. It builds people who love music, value teamwork, and strive for excellence in everything they do.

Preparing Students for the Future

The skills developed through marching band — discipline, adaptability, teamwork, and leadership — form a foundation for success in any path students choose.

I’ve seen graduates go on to thrive as engineers, educators, doctors, and entrepreneurs. What they carry from marching band isn’t just musicianship — it’s mindset.

If you’re building a program that empowers students beyond performance, the Build Your Show tool can help you design the kind of experience that transforms both music and lives.

Conclusion

Marching band shows are more than halftime entertainment — they’re training grounds for life. The discipline, creativity, and collaboration learned on the field shape stronger, more confident young adults ready to take on the world.

Support your local band. Cheer them on. The lessons they’re learning out there will last far beyond the final note.

My goal is for your band to take the field with a marching band show that feels like it was written specifically for them — because in many ways, it will be.

Absolutely. Every show I write is designed with contest performance in mind. I’ve worked with programs that compete at local festivals, UIL events, and Bands of America regionals, and I understand how adjudicators evaluate both music and effect. Each of my marching band shows includes moments of clarity, contrast, and pacing that judges look for, while also staying accessible to your students. Whether your band is aiming for captions, division placements, or just to take a big step forward competitively, I’ll ensure the music supports your goals. At the same time, I never lose sight of student experience — because great contest results come from students who love what they’re performing.

Simply fill out the form on this page and let me know which marching band shows caught your eye, or what kind of musical direction you’d like to explore. Once I receive your message, I’ll personally reach out to learn more about your program — your instrumentation, your student strengths, and your goals for the season. From there, I’ll recommend the best options and explain how I can customize the music for you. If you’d like, we can schedule a short call so you can ask questions directly. My process is designed to be simple, collaborative, and efficient, so you can focus on leading your students while I take care of the music.

That includes all woodwind and brass music, fully adapted to your ensemble, as well as the entire collaborative process described above.

To put that number in context: some programs spend a few hundred dollars on music each year. Others spend tens — or even hundreds — of thousands on a single production. There’s no single “right” choice.

This option sits in the middle.

You’re getting proven music, thoughtful adaptation, and direct access to an experienced arranger and former band director.

That’s why every one of my marching band shows includes music that students enjoy playing and audiences enjoy hearing. From catchy motifs to dramatic build-ups and memorable finales, the writing is designed to keep energy high across the season. I can blend selections seamlessly, rework transitions, and make sure the final product feels cohesive. This approach is especially helpful for bands that want something fresh while still taking advantage of proven music.
